The article “Smart
Road technology could turn highways into crash-sensing ‘touchpads’”
(2018) introduces and explains the latest features and the
newest technology for roads and highways that will make motorists and
drivers a safer place to drive. The article states
that having this technology will remarkably increase the safety
of the riders on the road as there will be sensors and detectors to
detect the movement of the vehicles on the road if there are
any accidents that may occur while drivers are on the
road. Even though ‘touchpads’ have their benefits,
the downside of the technology is that it will affect the rural areas as
they do not have advanced technology that will conduct proper electricity
to the touchpads. With
the improvement of ‘touchpads’ over the years, Smart Road Technology should be
implemented as it improves the safety of motorists.
Firstly,
it is the advantages of the application of Smart Road Technology and its
correlation to accident reporting time. As safety is a number one factor, the
use of sensors and detectors play the important role which reports accident
immediately through the ‘touchpad’. According to the NBC News website (David
Cox, 2018), the devices and technology being input are shown that they can
alert immediately if any emergency occurs. Another article from intel ("The Future of Smart Road Infrastructure", n.d.) stated
that the advanced technology installed such as monitoring systems will provide
safety for riders and users. Therefore, having a smart application that can report
time immediately is one of the advantages.
Secondly,
another advantage will be the usage and the functions of the smart
slabs being constructed. The types of functions being input are wi-fi
connectivity, sensors such as pressure sensors and sensors that help the
environment like notifying the weather conditions. According to the NBC News website (David Cox, 2018), the connections will be
used in the fibreoptic cables to put into the concrete
slabs. From there, a website stated that (User, 2018) precast
concrete is built as it is cost-efficient, long-lasting and reduces the time to
construct the roads. The smart slabs will provide information to users such as road
conditions, wet weather conditions or an accident immediately (Stein, 2021). With the sensors and internet connection,
emergency centres or users will be alerted through their mobile phones. Hence,
the usage and functions of the smart slabs are one of the advantages.
On the
other hand, there is the downside of implementing smart road technology. As all
this smart road technology involves high technology equipment, it will affect rural
areas or cities where they do not have the proper equipment and technology
being input at those areas as well as the amount of money to construct the
smart road which states by the NBC News website (David Cox,
2018). Some rural areas may not receive internet connection which is a
disadvantage as users are supposed to receive information through their phones
since the technology will be connected to the users’ phones. This technology is
best implied on a larger scale rather than smaller roads and rural areas. Hence,
the cost and areas will affect the smart road technology.
In
conclusion, because of the advanced technology being input, it will provide safety
for riders and their loved ones. However, this smart technology is not suitable
for rural areas or small roads.
